How do I create a lesson plan?

Task

Your goal is to create a learning activity plan that will address the learning styles and needs of all of the students in an assigned learning environment. Your plan will be very detailed as you are developing it for another educator to implement with the identified group of learners. The activity you design should last between 50 and 120 minutes. You may choose any of the projects you have created in EDIT 2000 this semester to use as a learning object within your learning activity plan.

You will use the ASSURE model as the framework for your learning activity and you will submit the activity using the instructional plan template.

Process

STEP ONE:

What is the ASSURE Model?

1. Read "Chapter 3: The Assure Model" in Instructional Media and Technologies for Learning by Robert Heinich, Michael Molenda, James D. Rossell, and Sharon E. Smaldino.

2. Take the multiple choice quiz over the chapter. Reread relevant portions of the chapter if you make less than 80%.

STEP TWO:

This section is divided into the six components of the ASSURE Model.

Analyze Learners:

Before designing a lesson it is important to understand the group of learners you will be working with. Try to imagine the learning environment with the identified group of learners. Where are the learners sitting? What are the learner expectations? What prior knowledge and experiences do they bring to the learning environment? How do they learn best?

Unfold your slip of paper titled "Learners". Use this information to start working on this section of your lesson.

Write a short paragraph describing the general characteristics of the group of learners you are working with - socioeconomics, experiences, etc. and include this in the Analyze Learners section of your instructional plan template. Address components 1-5 in this section of the template.

What would you predict to be the most prominent learning styles for your group of learners. Think back to your K-12 experience - what instructional strategies and methods did your teachers use to create a particularly memorable lesson? Based on your learning styles, why do you think such lessons were effective?

Review pages 50-52 in Chapter 3 and then complete component #6 in the Analyze Learners section of the template based on your thoughts about learning styles.

State Objectives:

What are instructional objectives? Is it really necessary to write such detailed objectives? How can you adapt state standards so that they fit the requirements of the ASSURE model?

Review the following websites for background on designing instructional objectives:

1. Introduction to Instructional Objectives
2. Writing Instructional Objectives

Also review pages 53-56 in Chapter 3.

Test your knowledge of the Behavior, Condition, and Degree parts of instructional objectives.

Using the Georgia Performance Standards as a guide, write at least 2 objectives for your learning activity and include them in the State Objectives section of the template.

Select the Methods, Media, and Materials:

Brainstorm some ideas for what types of teaching methods, media, and materials you can use to address your learning objectives. Review the teaching strategies you investigated at the beginning of the semester. Review pages 56-61 in Chapter 3.

The teaching strategies you select should be based on the analysis of your learners and the objectives you are addressing in your learning activity. Methods, media, and materials that are chosen should be selected based on their ability to support the teaching strategy, meet the needs of the learners, and address the learning objectives.

*Unfold your slip of paper titled "Methods, Media, and Materials" - here you will find what resources are available to you in your learning environment.

*Select the teaching methods and the resources that will be used for your learning activity. Make sure you stay within the parameters of the resources that are available to you. You do not need to use all of the materials - but you cannot plan to use something that is not available in your learning environment. Add this information to the template. Make sure to include specific details.

Utilize Media and Materials

How will you use your selected materials for facilitating learning? Review pages 61-63 in Chapter 3.

*On your template, describe how you will address the "5 P's".

  • What materials will you need to preview?
  • What materials will need to be prepared ahead of time?
  • How will you prepare the physical learning environment?
  • How will you prepare the learners?
  • How will you provide the learning experience? (What role will you play?)

Require Learner Participation

You need to pull all of the pieces of your learning activity together in this section. This will be the longest section of the template and should serve as a narrative for the activity. Review pages 66-68 in Chapter 3 before beginning this section.

*On the template, list in sequential order what will occur during the implementation of your learning activity. Make sure to include time durations for specific segments.

Evaluate and Revise

This is the final portion of your learning activity. You are not only evaluating learner performance, but the performance of the instructor and the effectiveness of the media selected. You will want to review pages 68-73 in Chapter 3 before beginning this section. You may also find the following link about designing rubrics to be helpful.

*On the template, create a rubric that evaluates learner performance during and after the completion of the learning activity. Make sure that you are determining whether learners have met the stated learning objectives.
