Workforce Education

Undergraduate Degree Programs

The Program of Workforce Education maintains high standards of excellence in providing instruction, research, and service. A major in Career and Technical Education (BSED) prepares educators to teach a cluster of career and technical education courses in public secondary schools in grades 7 - 12 and postsecondary institutions. Areas of Emphasis are available leading to teacher certification for grades 7 – 12 in Business, Health Occupations, Marketing, Technology, and Trade and Industrial education. A non-certification emphasis in Business and Industry Training prepares graduates to seek placements as educators in non-education settings including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, business, and industry. The Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences leading to certification is offered jointly by the Colleges of Family and Consumer Sciences and Education.

Business Education

Business education prepares educators for grades 7 – 12 in Georgia. The curriculum provides the opportunity for students to take courses in accounting, economics, and legal studies in the Terry College of Business. A series of business education and professional education courses are taken in the College of Education.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education

The Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences is offered jointly by the Colleges of Family and Consumer Sciences and Education. Family and Consumer Sciences Education prepares educators to strengthen home and family life and prepares people for careers in Family and Consumer Sciences. The curriculum provides study in teaching methodology as well as in the fields of child and family development, foods and nutrition, housing and consumer economics, and textiles, merchandising, and interiors.

Health Occupations

The emphasis in health occupations education provides a series of professional education courses for individuals who hold credentials in health related occupations to prepare them to teach in high school and postsecondary institutions.

Marketing Education

The Marketing Education program prepares individuals to teach a cluster of marketing and marketing-related courses in public secondary and postsecondary institutions. The curriculum provides the opportunity for students to take courses in accounting, economics, legal studies and a cross-section of courses in marketing and management offered by the Terry College of Business. A series of marketing education and professional education courses are taken in the College of Education. Additional opportunities for marketing internships and occupational updates in business and industry are provided for majors in marketing education.

Technology Education

Technology Education provides a core of courses in energy and power, production, and communications which prepare individuals to understand technology and the impact technology has in the world today and in the future. A series of professional education courses prepare individuals for teaching in school and business and industry settings. Emphasis is placed on assisting individuals to develop the ability to think critically, create, learn, and problem solve in technological environments through structured learning experiences that utilize interdisciplinary, interactive, and inquiry-oriented instructional approaches.

Trade and Industrial Education

The emphasis in trade and industrial education provides a series of professional education courses for individuals who hold trade and industry credentials to prepare them to teach in high school and postsecondary institutions.

Entrance Requirements

Expectations of Transfer Students

Recommended courses for transfer students in business and marketing education include accounting, business law, economics, and psychology. Courses and/or competence in word processing is also required for upper level courses in business education.

Special Requirements

An overall 2.5 GPA is required for admission to teacher education.

Internships

Supervised observations and participation in cooperating schools and student teaching are required for teacher certification students. Business internships are required in the marketing and business and industry training options.
