Graduate Assistantships

The Primary Goal of an assistantship is to permit orderly progress, academically and financially, through a graduate degree program. Graduate assistants occupy dual roles - they are both students of UGA and temporary student employees of the University.

Departmental Assistantships

There are two classifications of graduate assistantships in the Department of Workforce Education, Leadership and Social Foundations.

  • Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) is a student enrolled in the Graduate School in a degree program in Occupational Studies who is assigned to assist one or more faculty members with research projects.
  • Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) is a student enrolled in the Graduate School in a degree program in Workforce Education, Leadership and Social Foundations who is assigned to instruct one or more undergraduate courses offered by the department.

Graduate assistants receive tuition waivers so long as the student:

  • performs at least one-third time service (13 hours per week) for the University;
  • is paid at the approved rate for a graduate assistant in the college or department; and
  • is employed at least 60% of the class days of the semester for which the waver is requested.

To apply for an assistantship in the Department of Workforce Education, Leadership and Social Foundations, send a cover letter with your list of educational goals to the Department Head of Workforce Education, Leadership and Social Foundations. Include a current vita with your cover letter.

General University Assistantships

University-wide assistantships are awarded each year by the Graduate School from a list of highly qualified candidates who are recommended by their major departments. Applicants are rated on their academic record, test scores, recommendations, and other pertinent information. Applicants provide the above referenced materials no later than January 30 of each year.
