Workforce Education

Graduate Degree Programs

Through its Graduate Programs, the Program of Workforce Education prepares educators to assist individuals to meet the challenges of living and working in a global society. The Program offers comprehensive, broad-based curricula that focus on workforce preparedness, integration of research on workplace issues, integrating technology and basic skills applications into courses, and increased efforts to prepare educators to work with different populations.

Master of Arts for Teachers Degree (M.A.T.)

The MAT degree in the Program of Workforce Education is designed for individuals who have completed a bachelor's degree in a field outside of education with specialization in an area related to career and technical education and are seeking initial teaching certification at the graduate level.

Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.)

The M.Ed. degree in the Program of Workforce Education enhances the knowledge base of accomplished career and technical educators at the graduate level. This degree program is designed for individuals who have completed a bachelor's degree in education with a specialization in an area of career and technical education (i.e. Agricultural Education, Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Marketing Education, Technological Studies).

Online Master of Education (M.Ed.)

The Online M.Ed. degree in the Program of Workforce Education is designed for individuals whohave completed a bachelor’s degree in education with a specialization in an area of Career andTechnical Education (CTE) (i.e. Agricultural Education, Business Education, Family and ConsumerSciences Education, Marketing Education, Trade and Industrial Education, Technological Studies). TheOnline M.Ed. Program is designed for the working teacher who may be unable to attend traditionaluniversity classes due to job demands, location, or family responsibilities. The degree programoperates using a cohort format, admitting 20 students each fall semester.

Specialist in Education Degree (Ed.S.)

Graduate students who have obtained a masters degree can work toward the Specialist in Education degree with an emphasis in Workforce Education (career and technical education). This degree program is a self-contained, terminal degree program. It provides advanced study for those preparing for positions which call for a higher level of competence and specialization in career and technical education beyond that of the masters degree but without the heavy emphasis on research of the doctoral degree.

The program for the education specialist degree consists of a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours of study at the graduate level beyond the master’s degree, including specific core courses and a course in statistics.

The program is planned as a logically organized whole in light of the student’s record in previous undergraduate and graduate courses.

Specialist in Education Degree (Ed.S.) in Collaboration with the School of Social Work

The Ed.S. degree in the Program of Workforce Education, in collaboration with the School of Social Work, is designed for those individuals holding a BSW and MSW and are seeking advanced graduate study and certification as a School Social Worker.

Doctor of Education Degree (Ed.D)
The doctoral degree in the Program of Workforce Education prepares individuals for leadership, university teaching, and other roles in career and technical education. The typical program of study requires forty eight (48) semester hours of course work beyond the masters degree. The Program of Workforce Education requires a minimum of 6 hours of core courses, 6 hours of electives, 15 hours of research, 9 hours in a functional minor, and 12 hours of dissertation course work. The degree presupposes a minimum of three full years of study beyond the master’s degree and cannot be secured through summer work alone. At least two consecutive semesters (i.e., enrollment for a minimum of 20 hours of consecutive course work included on the program of study) must be spent in full-time resident study on The University of Georgia campus, one of which may be a summer session.

All requirements for this degree, except the dissertation and final oral examination, must be completed within a period of six years. The time requirement begins with the first registration for graduate courses on the student's program of study.

The Program of Workforce Education offers courses in the late afternoons and evenings to provide opportunity for continued employment while pursuing the degree. Courses are also offered in the summer session and online.

Ed.D. Degree Sheet

Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D)
The Ph.D. degree will prepare students for careers in which research and scholarship are central activities. Graduates of this degree program will be prepared to conduct research and formulate policy at major universities, various types of research centers, as well as state departments of education and regional universities and colleges. The typical program of study requires seventy-two to eighty (72-80) semester hours of course work beyond the masters degree. The Program of Workforce Education requires a minimum of 20 hours of core courses, 25 hours of research, and 20 hours of dissertation work. The degree presupposes a minimum of three full years of study beyond the master’s degree and cannot be secured through summer work alone. At least two consecutive semesters (i.e., enrollment for a minimum of 30 hours of consecutive course work included on the program of study) must be spent in full-time resident study on The University of Georgia campus, one of which may be a summer session.

Individuals may seek to add additional teaching and leadership endorsements to their present teaching certificate in areas under the Program of Workforce Education.
