1917

John T. WheelerDepartment of Vocational Agricultural Education founded in College of Agriculture and headed by John T. Wheeler, and degrees of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education offered through program.

1918

Women are allowed admission to the University of Georgia into the College of Agriculture’s Department of Home Economics and the Peabody School of Education only.

1932

Board of Regents adds a new College of Education to UGA including the Georgia State Teacher’s College, Peabody School of Education, and the education units from Georgia State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts

1933

Department of Vocational Agricultural Education is moved into the College of Education, as well as the newly combined Department of Home Economics Education and Department of Rural Education

1943

Georgia legislature commissioned the development of a Vocational Education program in industrial arts, trade and industry, and distributive education within the College of Education

1945

Home Economics Education receives grant funding from General Mills to conduct workshops around the state on nutrition education

1946

O.C. AderholdO.C. Aderhold is named Dean of the COE, the first Dean to come from Vocational Education

1947

Vocational Education is expanded to also include Commercial Studies and Commercial Education, the predecessors to Business Education

1950

Dean Aderhold is promoted to University President and still remains the only UGA president to come from Vocational Education

1958

Bachelor degree programs in the College of Education included Agriculture Education, Business Education, Home Economics Education, and Industrial Arts Education; Professional degrees included Master of Arts in Education, Master of Education, The Sixth Year Program, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy

1960

Ralph H. TolbertDr. Ralph H. Tolbert appointed Chairman of Division of Vocational Education;  sixth-year certification programs (precursor to the Specialist degree) were approved in Business Education, Vocational Agriculture, Vocational Home Economics, and Educational Leadership (administration, counseling, and supervision)

1960 – 1968

1963

Eleven typing, shorthand, and office machine courses were moved from the College of Business Administration to the College of Education to be taught in Business Education; a new graduate sequence in Business Administration Education was also established

1964

Phi Beta Lambda chapter is established for students in Business Education; Iota Lambda Sigma is established for students in Trade and Industrial Education; Home Economics Education began offering a Master’s degree for School Lunch Directors

1966

Master, Specialist, and Doctor of Education degrees were added for Adult Education

1967

In reaction to the Competency Based Teacher Education movement, a Social Foundations department is established in the COE

1968

1970

Specialist certification programs were officially changed to Specialist in Education degrees by the Board of Regents

1971

Four and five year degree programs are added for Health Occupations

Paul ScottC. Paul Scott is appointed Chairman of Division of Vocational Education; Bureau of Education Studies and Field Studies became the Department of Education Administration headed by Carvin L. Brown

Richard LynchDr. Richard Lynch appointed Department Head for Vocational Education and is named Director of Division of Adult, Business, and Vocational Education later that year

Unit renamed Division of Adult Education and Occupational Studies

1992

Merger between Division of Adult Education and Occupational Studies and Division of Educational Leadership into School of Leadership and Lifelong Learning; as a part of merger, the Departments of Education Administration, Curriculum, and Supervision combined to Department of Educational Leadership headed by Ed Pajak
