John W. Schell, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Studies at The University of Georgia. He holds an undergraduate degree in Social Studies from Central Missouri State and a Master's degree in Human Resources Management from the University of Utah. Dr. Schell received a Ph.D. in 1984 Comprehensive Vocational Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Dr. Schell has administered vocationally oriented programs for welfare recipients, Job Corps completers, and school-to-work transition programs. In the 1970's Dr. Schell became State Coordinator of School-to-Work programs for the Missouri Department of Employment Security. Later he became State Supervisor in the Manpower Training Unit of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In that job he administered statewide federally funded job training programs that were operated by local school districts. He also administered the Governor's 6% set-aside funds for special initiatives. After completing his doctorate Dr. Schell was Director and CEO of Training Associates, in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1988, Dr. Schell became an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1989 he was named Assistant Director of the Center for Vocational Personnel Development.
In 1990 Dr. Schell was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Vocational Education at The University of Georgia. He was tenured and promoted in 1994.
Dr. Schell's research examines sociological theories of learning including areas of situated cognition, communities of practice and contextual teaching and learning. Specifically, his focus is on implications for teaching practices formulated under these theoretical frameworks. His publications have appeared in numerous scholarly journals including the Journal of Vocational Education Research, Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, Community College Journal of Research and Practice, and the Journal of Career and Technical Education (JCTE). His research has been recognized by the Technology Education Division of the Association of Career and Technical Education. Two of his articles were named Outstanding Manuscript in 1992 and 1993 by the National Association of Industrial-Technical Teacher Educators.

Dr. Schell has also been recognized for his excellence in teaching by the UGA College of Education Faculty Senate in 1994. He was honored for his service to the college by Kappa Delta Epsilon, 1996-1997. Dr. Schell was named an Honorary Member of the Golden Key National Honor Society in 1997. As a doctoral student at the University of Missouri he was elected to the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges.
