Javier Zapata, a native of Valdemoro, Spain, worked for five years with Even Start, a family literacy program that allowed him to work with preschool children in their homes, and now is pursuing his master's degree in education through the TELL Program.

This school year, Javier began teaching prekindergarten at Barrow Elementary School. In October 2005, Javier received the Howard B. Stroud Award for Community Service from the Clarke County Foundation for Excellence in Public Schools and was voted Super Citizen of the Week by the Athens Banner Herald. Zapata said he has a lot of fun with his students. "Teaching and learning in the classroom is what I love," he said.
