    TOEFL Workshop

It's not all fun and games... TELL participants work hard, too! On Thursday, September 18th, 2003, an excited group of 10 TELL Scholars and pre-TELL participants gathered at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Athens for a three-hour workshop in Introduction to the TOEFL. A good score on the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, is needed for entrance into most academic programs at U.S. colleges and universities, and this workshop helped students understand what to expect as they prepare for the examination.

Students came from all over north Georgia, including Alpharetta, Duluth, Winder, Gainesville, and even Milledgeville!

As this was the first event in the TELL workshop series, students used this time to begin new friendships with the colleagues who are joining them in the program. Even a few husbands dropped by to introduce themselves and meet the group ®¢ spouses are always welcome at these workshops!

Each student took home a binder containing complete notes from the presentation and practical handouts such as lists of transitions, sample questions, and an essay self-evaluation checklist.

This workshop is one of several that have been prepared exclusively for TELL participants. Future TELL workshops include Introduction to Praxis I, scheduled for October 16, 2003 at the Georgia Center; Improving Written Communication for Teachers and Pre-Teachers, which will be offered in Gainesville on November 11, 2003; and TOEFL Writing, which will be available early next year.

Christine Burgoyne coordinates the academic support portion of the TELL program and can register TELL participants for any of the upcoming workshops. Contact her by email at Christine.Burgoyne@gactr.uga.edu, by phone at 706.542.6473, or in person in Room 270 at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education. If you are a TELL Scholar who needs TOEFL but missed the workshop, let Chris know; as soon as there are enough students she will offer the workshop again.
