Elementary Competition Trial Contest Rules

Paper Engineering Challenge:

DESIGN A POP-UP INVITATION
Work in teams of two. Each team will design and make one card and will document their process using a design map.

Objectives:
Investigate paper mechanisms
Create movement using paper mechanisms
Design a pop-up greeting card for a special occasion
Choose appropriate mechanisms communicate a specific message

Resources:
All materials will be provided at the competition!

Procedure:
Getting ready:
Investigate pop-up cards
Learn and practice cutting, scoring, folding techniques.
Review resources.

Design brief:
Design and make a pop-up invitation and envelop for a special occasion:
The special occasion, all necessary resources, and additional information will be provided to contestants at the TECA East Regional Conference.

Specifications:
The envelope should be no larger than 8 1/2 "x 11"
The card must fit in the envelope
The card should feature two different kinds of mechanisms
The card should use color appropriately and effectively
The card should clearly communicate its message, including time, place and any other necessary information
Attention should be given to neatness and workmanship

Documentation:
Record process on design map using the sheets provided.

Evaluation:
Group critique
Evaluation by judges based on both card and design map, using rubric provided

One sheet with space for:
Concept statement: Identification of special event and intended approach
Ideas with indication of chosen idea
Technical details
Reflections on what has been learned in this activity.
