Student Teaching Information
Requirements
The academic advisor has the responsibility, in cooperation with the student, to decide when the student is ready for student teaching. This decision should come preferably at the end of the junior year, and should be based upon the following requirements:
The student
- is recommended by the teaching field department;
- possesses the necessary special competencies in the field of specialization for student teaching, in addition to courses completed and grades earned, as judged by his or her advisor;
- has satisfactorily completed the following professional education sequence and/or methods courses and required teaching field courses with a grade of "C" or better:
- Early Childhood majors: has satisfactorily completed pre-Level I through Level III courses;
- Middle School majors: has satisfactorily completed Level I through Level III courses and Out Semester Courses before they can student teach; \
- All other subject field majors: has satisfactorily completed EFND 2030 Foundations of Education or its equivalent, or EPSY 2020, Learning and Development, and the subject field methods and curriculum courses;
- has an overall GPA of 2.50 or higher as established by the department (e.g., 2.60 for English, Foreign Language and 2.75 for Early Childhood and Middle School);
- has had a criminal background check completed. (Contact Martha Pruet at 542-4185 for further information.)
- has satisfactory personal health to assume the responsibilities that are involved in student teaching and eventual full-time teacher.
