Placement of Student Teachers
STUDENTS: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIND YOUR OWN PLACEMENT. THERE ARE SPECIFIC PROCEDURES REQUIRED BY VARIOUS SCHOOL SYSTEMS FOR THE PLACEMENT OF STUDENT TEACHERS. DEVIATIONS FROM THESE COULD JEOPARDIZE YOUR PLACEMENT. THERE IS A PLACE FOR YOU TO IDENTIFY SPECIAL PLACEMENT CONCERNS ON THE STUDENT TEACHING APPLICATION OR YOU CAN TALK WITH YOUR DEPARTMENT STUDENT TEACHER COORDINATOR.
A student teaching placement will not be requested until you have been admitted to Teacher Education OR a criminal background check is in progress or has been completed. Admission to teacher education is NOT the same as being admitted to the College of Education or to a program of study. If in doubt, check in 122-B Aderhold Hall.
Assignments for student teaching are based primarily upon the principle of placing the student in a student teaching situtation that will provide for optimal professional growth. The assignment is made cooperatively with the school system, the subject field coordinator of student teaching, and the Educational Field Experiences Office. Assignments are generally made with commuting distance of the Athens area.
Student requests for placement that exceed 100 miles from UGA are at the discretion of the department. These can SOMETIMES be handled as courtesy or as transient placements. You should contact Ms. Pruet in 122-B Aderhold Hall for procedures.
Courtesy: The student would enroll at UGA and another institution would agree to place and supervise the student teacher as a courtesy. There is a possibility that the student would be required to pay the cost of the college supervisor's travel.
Transient: The student would actually enroll at another institution which would place and supervise the student for student teaching. The grade and credit would then be transferred back to UGA.
