The Educational Field Experiences Office coordinates practicums, field experiences, internships, and student teaching through the cooperative efforts of all departments in the College of Education and many public school districts in the state. This handbook outlines the policies and procedures of student teaching at The University of Georgia for student teachers, supervising teachers, and college supervisors.

INTRODUCTION

The Student Teaching Handbook was prepared for student teachers, practicing professionals, and college personnel who cooperate with The University of Georgia's College of Education student teaching program. Each participant has specific responsibilities in the student teaching component of teacher education. The handbook has been prepared to assist participants to become aware of their own role, and that of each of the other members of the team. It has been assembled with sections pertaining to the overall program, roles of the individuals, and the joint responsibilities of the parties involved. Although the handbook is not intended to be all inclusive, it does provide a comprehensive overview of the entire program with suggestions, recommendations, and requirements designed to facilitate an effective student teaching program.

Because student teaching represents the culmination of the professional preparation program for future teachers at The University of Georgia, it provides the major opportunities for the student to orchestrate those basic principles, theories, methods, and techniques into teaching strategies that are creative, comprehensive, and effective. The degree of success experienced in student teaching indicates how well a student has mastered these essentials, and also reflects a degree of teaching effectiveness.

The University of Georgia is aware of its role and responsibility in the preparation of teachers. In an effort to meet the challenges of a democratic society and provide quality education to all public school students, the teacher education program provides its students with the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and insights that are important to improve the academic quality of today's youth.

The University could not prepare the quality of teachers it does without the assistance and cooperation of the public schools that serve as student teacher centers. In these schools, student teachers are able to experience realistic school situations under the supervision of public school personnel, as well as supervisors from The University of Georgia. There is no satisfactory substitute for such experience in the preparation of teachers. Student teachers, being exposed to a variety of stimulating learning experiences under the direction of effective supervisors, not only learn how to direct the experiences of their pupils, but become aware of real-life professional problems and solutions offered. As such, The University of Georgia is most grateful to the personnel of the student teaching centers who give so freely of their time in assisting these students in becoming an asset to the teaching profession.
