Meeting Minutes

September 11, 2002

Rene Hammond opened the meeting with discussion of the poster to be prepared for the COE Fall Celebration Meeting on September 18. The committee has met and discussed ideas for the poster and updating the brochure created last year by Stephanie Bales. A photograph was taken at this meeting to be used on the poster and the brochure. The brochure will serve as a model for the poster.

Committee Reports

Staff Awards: No report. There was general discussion of the function of the Staff Awards committee and the committee member's roles.

Newsletter: April Layden from OIT will be joining this committee. Rene encouraged better quality material in the newsletter perhaps in the form of staff spotlights and also more frequent publication. It was suggested that one person from each school contribute something to the newsletter each time it was published.

Safety: No report.

Staff Council: The previous meeting of Staff Council included visitors from Bike Athens (Jason Henderson), Athens Transit (Judy Dudley), Campus Transit (Ronald Hamlin), UGA Architects (Danny Sniff), and Parking (Joyce Hardman). Each gave a brief presentation tying together recent changes that have taken place on campus relating to the new parking plan, the building of green spaces, and fielding questions after their presentations. Alternative transportation was discussed for UGA employees and the community at large. Free bus rides are now available to UGA staff on the city buses. Bus ridership has increased tremendously in the first month since the new UGA parking plan was implemented. Jason Henderson of Bike Athens discussed cycling as an alternative to driving and combining cycling with riding the Athens buses. The Athens buses have bike racks. He distributed handouts of bike facts and bicycling safety.

New Business

It was suggested that the staff photo album housed in the Aderhold Staff Lounge be brought up-to-date. Valerie Kilpatrick suggested that staff might be more comfortable donating their own photos for the album. Heidi Sartain and Janice Cieslak will work on this project.

A teddy bear/toy drive was proposed as a community service project for SRG for the holidays. Details need to be worked out as to how this will be conducted and what agency might be used.

Also proposed was using SRG as a vehicle to bring about awareness for the American Cancer Society through various fundraising efforts being conducted by staff, students, and faculty.

A regular meeting time was decided for the second Wednesday each month at 10:00 a.m. Meeting places to be announced.
