Meeting Minutes

G-23 Aderhold Hall
October 11, 2001

Present:

Betty Blum, Judy Harper, Becky Hendren, Pam LaSalle, Elizabeth Platt, Betty Prickett, Freita Strickland, Margaret Turner

10:00 a.m.

Dean Castenell was invited to this month's meeting and addressed the group regarding COE issues and budget cuts. He said there would be a change in approach to concerns and will be available to answer any questions about impending changes in the college. He said the budget cuts were serious in COE and that vacant positions may not be filled. There will be cuts in non-personnel categories. The travel budget has been cut by fifty percent. Governor Barnes said there will be a 2.5% reduction this year and a 5% reduction next year. UGA raises will not be impacted and there will be no layoffs. Dean Castenell said that he would assess the situation this year and see what is in store for next year and that the raise pool for next year would not be effected by the reduction. Betty Prickett asked whether there would be money available to SRG for socials and awards. Dean Castenell responded that funds for socials may be reduced, but the monetary awards will not be affected. Kirk Oliver will meet with all school directors and office managers to go over department budgets. The university accepted a new reclassification plan. It will take 3-5 years to be implemented. The cost of implementation will be $3 million. Concerns will be possible inequities. Investment growth shows some academic units will double and some will shrink. Programs that make money will get money, others will be sustained.

September minutes were passed with an addendum of minutes from safety meeting.
