The "Chicken House" Design

Improved "Chicken House" Design

The ends of these common new schools are far less than user friendly. They are overwhelming, we would contend, to a young child. The two images show a full brick end wall and a less expensive brick and metal siding end wall. The corner classrooms behind these walls could have daylight from two sides and views in two directions. However, the windows were left off. We all have been in rooms with windows on two sides and can feel the quantitative and qualitative difference from rooms with windows on one side. We have theorized if there were windows on two sides of the end rooms they would be better for student learning. However, having windows would expose the rest of the rooms as worse than the end rooms. Results, for perverse democratic reasons, are that the windows are left off altogether.
