Playground and Park

Eight Bridges: An Outdoor Learning Environment as Viewed by a Small child

These views reveal how a small child might perceive and use the playground located at Harris Shoals Park. Several hardscape features are especially designed for the small child's perspective, although the park and playground include activities for older children and adults. Structures were planned to encourage developmentally appropriate activities for a child's growth. Designed and constructed by Dr. Lawrence Stueck, a SDPL associate, the playscape offers a challenge for the child's imagination and physical strength.

The built environment is entitled "Eight Bridges." It includes the covered bridge, the serpentine bridge, the suspension bridge, the high-low bridge, a bridge for children with physical disabilities, a "zig-zag" bridge influenced by Japanese culture, suspended truck tire bridge, and a horizontal ladder bridge. Children are exposed to a variety of geometric shapes and engineering principles (trusses, arches, suspension, and cantilever).

One feature of the playground, in keeping with SDPL's philosophy, is the natural setting. This shaded playground was constructed with minimal modification to the landscape. It rests on a 25 degree slope near a small creek.
