Campus Plan

School Site Selection

Adding criteria for new school site selection; a wooded site allows the buildings and parking lots to have shade. Clearings are carved out for buildings of 12,000 square feet or less. Landscape costs are reduced as is grass cutting cost due to less lawn area. Environmental education is facilitated on campus in the natural areas. A creek, pond, and constructed wetlands are also preferred. By building a campus with many smaller buildings, the finished grade can relate much closer to the existing grade. This eliminates the destruction of natural areas.

Construction Shop and Work Yard

The traditional vocational shop is extended down to elementary grades to facilitate a constructivist curriculum. An environment for an integrated curriculum with performance assessment is shown. To address Gardner's eight ways of knowing and learning (intrapersonal, interpersonal, aesthetic, kinesthetic, musical, ecological, mathematical/logical, and verbal) a diversity of approaches must be incorporated. In addition, to address the multitude of learning styles, a wide range of activities and assessments are used. The entire staff is involved with instruction which follows a service learning component in this community school setting.
