Endangered Pitcher Plants

Not far from the beaver pond, in the humid climate of South Alabama, these endangered plants struggle for survival among reeds and gall berries. Because they are located near an electric power line they also face the grim task of surviving herbicides sprayed on Summer plants for weed control.

Pitcher plants barely hang on for survival in an environment dominated by many people who may be unaware of their beauty and contribution to nature.

SDPL's objective is to help design the school's curriculum and create opportunities for students to view and study plants such as these in their natural habitat.

In this environment, concerted effort must be made to convey the message of conservation. Values education through the study of endangered plants is founded on the affective dimension of learning. Aesthetics must be part of learning.
