We are delighted that you have chosen to join us in Glasgow, Scotland (click here for a map) for the inaugural session of this study abroad program. This is the first year that the College of Education has offered this program and we consider your participation as integral to the development of this program. We are fortunate to have a partnership with the University of Glasgow and will be using facilities on their campus including one of their newer dorm facilities and classrooms in the School of Education. The faculty members in the UofG School of Education have developed working relationships with local schools in the Glasgow area and will facilitate our visits to three schools. The program would not be possible without this partnership and the relationships UofG has developed with Glasgow Education Services.
It is our goal that you will leave this experience with a broader view of the world beyond your current understanding of an education system while experiencing a different culture. We will challenge you to think about your own education thus far compared to what you experience while visiting and interacting with students and teachers in Scottish schools. You will be exposed to Scottish culture, food, and history and learn firsthand from UofG and K-12 students about their educational experiences. The schedule for our program is very full with most mornings spent in local schools and afternoon class meetings on the UofG campus. We have field trips planned in Glasgow and a full day in Edinburgh, Scotland’s two largest and most important cities. We are confident you will have a full “Scottish” experience while expanding your knowledge about education in an international context.
We recommend you read all materials provided, do your own research about Scotland, its history, customs, and contributions to the world. We promise you will be amazed with the many things that can be traced back to the Scots. Our best advice for you is that you come ready to be challenged in many way, that you come with an open mind, that you adjust your expectations for weather in June, and that you bring your sense of adventure!! We have no doubt you will fall in love with Scotland and will be coming back on your own!
