Courses

The study abroad will provide a field-based learning experience (practicum) for education majors who have been accepted into a teacher preparation program (in a USG school) and for non-education majors who have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours.  The College of Education has creating a new course, EDUC 4450/6450 International Educational Field Experiences in the Classroom and Community, to support a practicum experience in international P-12 schools.  Students will earn 3 semester hours for this course.  Students be involved in educational field experiences in a variety of ways including observation of instruction, shadowing students, and interviewing teachers and students.   This class will be taught by UGA faculty member, Dr. Janna Dresden, from the Elementary Education program in the College of Education.

Students will also be enrolled in EDUC 4100/6100, Special Topics in Educational Theory and Practice.  This course will explore the cultural and political aspects of Scotland that influence the educational system.  Students will be exposed to Scottish culture, history, food, music, and art through field trips, lectures delivered by University of Glasgow faculty and local experts.  Content will be delivered using a variety of strategies including guest lecturers, self-guided reading and exploration, and field trips. COE faculty member, Ms. Tracy Elder, will be the instructor of record for this course.  Students will earn 3 semester hours for this course.  See the EDUC 4100-6100 Syllabus for more details.

Sessions will be taught by UoG faculty, UGA faculty, and P-12 faculty from Scottish schools.  These seminar sessions will focus on educational practices in Scotland, specifically a comparison between the US and Scottish educational systems, examination of instruction and assessment strategies used in Scotland, and a comparison between the two Professional Development School models being implemented by both institutions.

Subsequent offerings of this study abroad program can be offered in either Maymester or the first session of summer school.  P-12 schools in Scotland are in session through the last week of June therefore; second short summer session is not an option.
