Transient Students

What is a transient student? A transient student is one who has been given approval by his or her home institution to attend another academic institution for a specific semester/session.   Students from other academic institutions who wish to attend UGA for a specific term (normally the summer) must complete six steps to be eligible to participate in a study abroad program:

Step 1: Apply to UGA as a Transient Student
Step 2: Submit Immunization Documentation
Step 3: Register for Classes
Step 4: Pay Tuition
Step 5: Complete Program Specific Pre-departure Requirements
Step 6: Order a transcript

CLICK HERE for the webpage on the UGA’s Office of International Education website where you will find step-by-step instructions for each of these steps.  This is necessary to be eligible for participation in the program and to earn the credits.

Prior to participation, transient students must provide the following to the program director:

Graduate Transient Students

Transient admission for graduate students may be granted to students in good standing at regionally accredited graduate schools who wish to enroll for one semester at the University of Georgia. The six steps for the Graduate Transient students is outlined below:

Step 1: Apply to UGA as a Graduate Transient Student
Step 2: Submit Immunization Documentation
Step 3: Register for Classes
Step 4: Pay Tuition
Step 5: Program Specific Pre-departure Requirements
Step 6: Order a transcript

Non-degree Status Students

What is non-degree status?  Applicants who do not intend to pursue a degree but who wish to take courses for professional advancement, licensure, or certification purposes, and who hold a baccalaureate degree or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution, should apply for non-degree status.

If you are not currently enrolled in a graduate program in the U.S. or if you will complete your graduate program before the study abroad program begins, you will need to enroll as a Non-degree seeking student. You will need to apply on-line and select non-degree status. You will also need to submit proof of the highest degree you have earned.

Non-degree applicants must submit the following to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

  • Application for admission
  • Application processing fee
  • Two official copies of transcripts from the institution that awarded the highest degree
  • Statement of purpose – to participate in a study abroad program for professional development related to your current employment
  • TOEFL scores for international students (refer to English Language Proficiency Requirement)

The statement of purpose should be completed in the space provided on the application for admission. An academic major must be entered in item 4 on the application for admission.

Because the Admissions Office does not review admissions applications until 30-60 days before the application deadline for the Summer semester, response to study abroad applications for transient students may be delayed.  Students will be making application for the study abroad prior to admission to UGA as a transient student. Transient Students should send a check for the deposit with their application.  The deposit will be refunded if the student is not accepted to UGA.
