David Gast is Professor of Special Education in the Department of Communication Sciences and Special Education. He directed the University of Georgia’s Study Abroad in Peru program from 1995-2005. Dr. Gast completed his doctorate in child psychology and child development at the University of Kansas in 1975. His expertise and research interests are in the areas of mental retardation (moderate, severe), autism spectrum disorders, applied behavior analysis, and single subject research methodology. He has traveled internationally to such places as India, South Africa, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Mexico, Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, and Guatemala. He has been visiting Ireland since 1997. Kathy Boyle-Gast, M.A.

Kathy Boyle-Gast has worked in the field of special education for 37 years. She is a certified elementary and special education teacher with 30 years teaching experience. Kathy currently works as an educational consultant and trainer in professional development with local and regional education agencies and as part-time instructor with the University of Georgia. She taught for 28 years in the public schools at the elementary and middle school levels (Kentucky and Georgia) in resource, self-contained, and collaborative special education settings. Kathy also held positions as liaison consultant for children with emotional and behavioral disorders, educational diagnostician, and due process case manager. She taught full time as an instructor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Georgia from 1991-1993, and as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kentucky in the 1980’s. Kathy has traveled extensively throughout Ireland since 1997, touring the country, taking courses in Irish culture and environment, visiting national schools, and meeting with educators and other Irish professionals involved in providing services to individuals with disabilities during her visits.
