- Standards and Ethics in Qualitative Research...............Earle Reybold, University of Texas, San Antonio
This session will explore ethics as an issue of quality in research practice, with special attention to participants' experiences with ethical dilemmas. What is the meaning of quality in qualitative inquiry? What is the relationship between ethical research and standards of quality? These questions will guide the session as we explore four approaches to defining standards of quality, then consider a non-restrictive approach that addresses quality as harmony of design, process, reflexivity, and reader satisfaction. We will personalize the discussion around participants' stories about their methodological decisions and definitions of quality research.
- Teaching Qualitative Research....................Kathleen deMarrais, University of Georgia
This institute is for faculty and graduate students who are interested in learning more about teaching courses in qualitative research. Participants will engage in discussion about course structures and teaching strategies. Course outlines, text selections, and pedagogical materials for a variety of courses will be shared.
- Write of Passage: Crafting Qualitative Texts...............JoBeth Allen, University of Georgia
"If people deride Œacademic writing¹ as dry and jargon-filled, why am I spending so much time learning how to do it? What are the alternatives? What voice is effective with what audiences‹and is there really an audience beyond The Five? Is writing an isolated task or should I consider a writing group or organize a writing retreat?" This workshop will explore these and other issues related to writing qualitative texts. Participants should bring one piece of in-progress qualitative research writing, a section no more than 5 pages long (e.g., an introduction, development of one theme).
- Introduction to NUD*IST and Ethnograph...............Judith Preissle & Mary Ann Fitzgerald, University of Georgia
This workshop will introduce participants to two qualitative data analysis programs. Participants will practice preparing documents for and importing documents into the software programs before exploring the basic coding procedures in these programs. Participants should be familiar with Windows 95, file management, and word processing. (Limit of 20 participants)
