Associate Professor and Early Childhood Education Program Coordinator
Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Kyunghwa received her B.A. and M.A. from Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea and her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign all in Early Childhood Education. A former kindergarten teacher from Korea, Kyunghwa explores cultural psychology as an alternative developmental framework of the 20th century’s grand developmental theories. She utilizes ethnography and cross-national research to examine how child development and culture constitute each other. Focusing on various sociohistorical constraints that both support and hinder the process of teaching and learning, she investigates cultural meanings and beliefs about normal and abnormal child development, ways to incorporate local knowledge and resources in classroom teaching through project methods, and effects of case-based pedagogy on teacher education.
