My primary research interest is how to teach and assess spoken language. In particular, I study learners’ engagement and performance during language-focused tasks. My dissertation study investigated whether paired learner assessment is a valid measure of L2 proficiency for developmentally equal and unequal learner pairings. The results showed that while linguistic accuracy was consistent across the pairings, and test-takers maintained task-completion goals, their uses of interaction strategies such as confirmation checks, clarification requests, and comprehension checks increased as their interlocutors' proficiency increased.
I have also conducted research studies on the social impact of language policy on marriage immigrants in Korea. I examine language policy such as naturalization examination and language test, media and corpus, and public school textbooks and interact with marriage immigrants and their children as I observe and interview them at childcare center, community center, and at their homes.
Having presented at various academic conferences in the United States, in Korea, and in the United Kingdom, I've published in the journal TESOL Video and Digital Media Newsletter (with Schreibeis), TESOL Quarterly (solo author), Language Testing (with Butler), Modern Language Journal (with Butler), English Today (with Jeon), Working Papers in Educational Linguistics (solo author), and Electronic Magazine for Multicultural Education (solo author).
At UGA, I will be in charge of developing MAT-TESOL program and direct doctoral students who study aspects of language education in the fields of TESOL and World Language Education specifically. My clinical roles involve both the MAT - TESOL and the non-degree ESOL programs that add endorsements or certificates to licensure. I will also teach a new course on language assessment from Spring 2013.
