PAVEd for Success: Building vocabulary and language development in young learners (Hamilton & Schwanenflugel, 2011)

Children need a strong foundation in oral language when they begin formal literacy instruction. Classroom activities targeting vocabulary and oral language are important for supporting language comprehension and the development of early literacy. Teachers are often given too-general advice to: (a) talk more with children; (b) read more books; and (c) teach more vocabulary. The PAVEd for Success program provides specific guidance for incorporating these ideas in the classroom. The PAVEd for Success program was shown to improve children’s expressive vocabulary, academic knowledge, and, when accompanied by good phonological and alphabet instruction, early reading.
