Outreach & Engagement

Outreach is ….

  • teaching that enables learning beyond the campus walls – extension of graduate programs outside of Athens and online, non-credit classes and programs, and service learning opportunities for our students.
  • service that directly benefits the public – providing services and developing relationships with people and organizations, such as school districts, community agencies, businesses, and governmental and non-governmental agencies.
  • research that makes what COE faculty members and students discover useful beyond the academic community thereby having an impact on policy, providing technical or expert assistance, public events and understanding.

Engagement occurs when . . .

outreach activities engage faculty, students, and community, which includes schools, workplaces, state agencies, etc., in a mutually beneficial and respectful partnership which:

  • addresses community-identified needs
  • co-creates knowledge
  • deepens students’ civic and academic learning
  • enhances community well-being
  • is sustained over time
  • enriches the scholarship of the faculty and the institution

The following occur when the faculty is engaged in outreach or engagement activities:

  • faculty member’s academic expertise is applied to the expressed need of the community or individual;
  • there is a direct application of knowledge to the need;
  • new knowledge is generated;
  • the impact of the effort is measured to determine impact; and there is a clear contribution to the institutional mission.
