Novell Networking in the College of Education

What is Novell? - Novell Netware Network Operating System is the operating system that runs on the University of Georgia College of Education File and Printer sharing servers. The Novell Client, which allows your machine to access the Novell server file and printer resources, is automatically installed and set up on College of Education purchased and configured desktop computers. If you set up a machine yourself, you most likely do not have the Novell Client installed. If you have the Novell Client installed you should see a large red "N" in the lower right hand corner of your Microsoft Windows machine. The Novell Client is used to access files on the Novell Servers as well as Networked printers. You do not need Novell to connect to the Internet or access your email.

User Accounts - To use the Novell resources you need a Novell user account. You can sign up for a Novell account at http://www.coe.uga.edu/oit/accounts/novell.html. You will be emailed your user name and password once the account is created. This account is created based on the department with which you are associated.

Download the Novell Client - If you need to access the College of Education network and you have determined that you do not have the Novell Client installed on your machine you can download the Novell Client 4.9 for Windows NT/2000/XP at http://www.coe.uga.edu/oit/help/downloads.html.

Install the Novell Client - Double click the self extracting file that was downloaded to your machine. When the WinZip Self-Extractor window appears click the Browse button. In the Browse to Folder windows that appears select the Desktop folder, and then click the OK button. Now click the Unzip button. A folder named WINNT should appear on your desktop. Open the WINNT folder, and then open the i386 folder. Double click setupnw. When the Novell Client Installation window appears click Install. When the Installation Complete window appears click Reboot. When your machine reboots the Novell Login screen should appear. Click the Advanced button. The following settings should be entered under the NDS tab. The server name will change based upon the building in which you are located.

Tree - UGA
Context - OFFICE.COE.UGA
Server - COE_OFFICE (Aderhold Hall)
Or Server - COE_OFFICE_RV (River's Crossing)
Or Server - COE_OFFICE_RY (Ramsey Center)

Changing Your Novell Password - To change your Novell password on a Windows 2000/XP machine you need to have the Novell Client installed and be logged in with your Novell user name and password. Press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys at the same time. In the Netware Security window click the Change Password button. Under Resource highlight the UGA tree next to your Novell user name. Enter your current Novell password followed by your new password. Confirm your new password, and click the OK button. Finally click OK when the "Passwords for all selected resources were successfully changed" prompt appears. Novell Client for Macintosh - On the College of Education network you do not use the Novell Client with the Macintosh operating system. You do need a Novell account to access files on the Novell servers with a Macintosh computer. The file server is accessed using a TCP/IP network connection. Network printers are accessed using Apple Talk.

Home Drive - The home drive is used to store personal files on the network and is restricted to your account. No one else has access to it. Your Novell Home Drive is automatically mapped to any machine running the Novell client that you log on to using your Novell user name and password. It will automatically get the "H" driver letter. You access your home directory by going to My Computer and double clicking on the H: drive.

Shared Drives - Shared drives on the Novell Servers are drives that are accessible to any user with rights to that drive. These drives are usually used to share documents within a department and are mapped automatically when you log on using your Novell user name and password, usually getting the G: drive letter. Shared drives cannot be seen or accessed by anyone who does not have rights connected with a particular shared drive.

There is one shared area on the Novell network that is accessible to everyone. It is automatically mapped to the S: drive letter. Anyone with a Novell user name and password can access this drive. The S: drive is a good way to share non-sensitive information. Any files in this area can be viewed, copied or deleted by anyone with a Novell account. Both shared drives can be accessed by double clicking them in My Computer.

Networked Printers - Printers with dedicated network connections are shared through the Novell network. If you need to print to a networked printer or connect a stand alone printer to the network please contact the OIT Help Desk.

Novell Server Backups - The Novell servers are backed up three times a week. Any information saved on a Novell drive can be retrieved after the end of a backup period. If you need information to be retrieved from a backup, please contact the OIT Help Desk.

Network Support
If you are having problems logging onto the College of Education network or printing to a networked printer you should try the following trouble shooting techniques.

  1. Make sure that your network cable is plugged into the back of your machine. The network port on the back of your machine looks like a large telephone jack. The end of the network cable has a connector that looks like a big telephone plug.
  2. Try restarting your machine and logging in again.
  3. Make sure that the Caps Lock key is not activated (are Novell accounts case sensitive?)
  4. When the Novell login screen appears when you start your computer, make sure that the "Workstation only" box is not checked.
  5. Make sure that your Username is typed correctly
  6. Check your login Advanced settings to make sure that they are correct. You can locate these by clicking on the "Advance" button in the lower right hand corner of the Novell login screen. The settings should be equivalent to the following example:

    Tree - UGA
    Context - OFFICE.COE.UGA
    Server - COE_OFFICE (Aderhold Hall)
    Or Server - COE_OFFICE_RV (River's Crossing)
Or Server - COE_OFFICE_RY (Ramsey Center)

If after checking each of the items listed above you still cannot login to the network, please call the OIT Help Desk.

If you have successfully logged onto the network, but you cannot print to a networked printer try the following trouble shooting techniques.

  1. Try restarting your machine.
  2. Try shutting down and then restarting the networked printer.
  3. Is there a printer icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen next to the Clock.
  4. If there is a printer icon double click on it to see if there are any print jobs waiting in the printer queue.
  5. If there are documents waiting in the que that are not printing call the OIT Help Desk for further support.
  6. Check to make sure that the printer is installed on your machine. Go to Start| Settings| Printers and Faxes. If the printer does not appear here, it needs to be installed.
  7. If the printer appears here but does not have a check next to it, it is not your default printer. You need to select the correct printer in the application you are printing from.
  8. If the printer appears here and is the default printer or you have selected it in your application, and you can still not print please call the OIT Help Desk for further support.
