About OIT |
Client Support, Infrastructure and StandardsData Security When considering the subject of data security, there are two main areas that come to mind, securing files and securing important data such as account numbers and social security numbers. There are various ways to take advantage of both. The College of Education provides students, faculty, and staff with the luxury of obtaining access to our secure Netware Network that will allow you to save files in other places than your personal or a publicly used computer. By obtaining a Novell account, you will have 2 drive mappings that will be important to you. The H: is your personal home directory that you may use for storage of personal documents. The S: is the Shared drive for the entire College of Education. Here, you will find a public shared area and many private shared areas for project or intraoffice collaboration. This is a good area to save information that may be a little too large to save on a disk. Moreover, it is just as secure as a disk due to the fact that your home directory is just that, yours. However, it is not wise to use this as personal storage. Although we do an exceptional job of keeping backups of the server, it is wise to keep your own back up of all information either on ZIP disks or burned to CD. More information about novell can be acquired at http://www.eits.uga.edu/lans/novell. Also, to get a COE Netware account visit: http://www.coe.uga.edu/oit/accounts/novell.html. If you have a need for such an area or you have any questions, please let us know at coehelp@uga.edu or 542-HELP(4357). Data encryption is another way of specifically securing important data such as account numbers and social security numbers within files, programs, and webpages. Infosec @ UGA's website provides a great sources of materials to further obtain knowledge about this subject. Their website can be accessed at http://www.infosec.uga.edu. |
