What if I have problems with a computer in the lab?

For assistance with the College of Education's Computer Labs, you may:

The OIT Computer Helpdesk Consultants are available to assist lab users from 8am to 6pm, Monday through Friday.

When reporting a problem with one of the College of Education's Computer Labs, please be sure to include the room number, station or printer requiring attention, a description of the problem, and a means by which we can contact you if more information is needed.

How do I reserve a lab?

If you have information regarding your class meeting time and your class needs space in one of the COE computer labs, please submit your request now.

As always, OIT prefers that you submit requests for computer labs no later than 7 days prior to the day of use. Advanced notice is needed to prepare the lab for any special software and hardware requests. It is also necessary to allow students time to plan their lab use since many students travel from out of town for this purpose.

Scheduling Criteria:

Lab schedules are assigned based on the following criteria: hardware capability, software licensing, availability, date request was submitted, and open access availability for students.

Submitting a Lab Request:

You may submit a lab request in a number of ways:
  1. You may request a lab by filling out the on-line lab request form. If you have questions about this new procedure, please contact Kristi Leonard at 542-7180.
  2. You may fill out the form that is available in room 232 Aderhold.
  3. You may send Kristi Leonard an e-mail that includes all of the necessary information (your name, phone number, e-mail address, course number or title, number of students, date lab is needed, time lab is needed, software needed, platform preference, and any other information necessary for the request).

Where can I temporarily place files as I work on them?

The "dropbox" is a designated area for students to temporarily place files as they are working on them. The "dropbox" is not a private area. Lab users may save, edit, or delete any file found in the "dropbox." Note: Anyone can access, edit, or delete any files found here.

Each instructor teaching in the COE computer labs may request to have instructional space on the lab server provided for them. Instructors will each have an "Inbox" and an "Outbox." The "Inbox" is a designated area for students to turn files in to their instructors. Students have the ability to copy files into the "Inbox", but once there, they cannot edit or delete them. Only the instructor may do so. Students can also see all of the files in an instructor's "Outbox", but they are unable to save, edit, or delete files in that directory. Instructors have the ability to save, edit, or delete any files in either their "Inbox", or the "Outbox" directories.

Note: When placing files in an instructor's "Inbox", students must first save and close their files. They may then copy the file into the appropriate "Inbox". Once copied, the files may not be modified further (in Macintosh labs, the file names will not appear although they have been successfully copied to the server).

OIT Computer Services staff will be monitoring the "dropbox" as a means to prevent possible problems with free server space. If deemed necessary, a file or files may be removed at any time with or without notice. This directory is only intended to serve as temporary storage space, and students are responsible for saving their work to their own media. OIT staff will also completely clean out the "dropbox" on a routine basis (often at the end of the academic term). When cleaning out the "dropbox", advanced notice will be made to all laboratory instructors.

Accessing the Storage Area

Win 98/2000:
You can access the "IN", "OUT", and "DROPBOX" areas in the following ways from any Win 98/2000 COE computer lab station...
  • Double-click on the "My Computer" Icon found on the desktop, and then select drive (H:).
  • Select the shortcut to (H:) from the Win 98/2000 Start menu.
  • From within an application, you may access the (H:) drive from any "save", "save as", or "open" dialog box (do not "save" to an instructor's "Inbox" -- see the information above).

Macintosh:

The "COE Labs Shared" will automatically be mounted on the desktop and be accessible upon startup of the computer. In the event that the server has been un-mounted (ie. the icon does not appear on the desktop), simply click on the Apple menu (top left-hand corner of the screen), and select "Re-mount the Lab Server."

You can access the "IN", "OUT", and "DROPBOX" areas in the following ways from any Macintosh COE computer lab station...

If you encounter any problems while using the server storage space, please submit email to coehelp@uga.edu or visit the OIT helpdesk in room 231 of Aderhold Hall.
