file transfer protocol

Today in a number of classes, webpages are becoming a requirement. Although the development of a webpage can be either easy or difficult, the most troubling part is the actual publishing of the webpage. In order to make sure your page is available for the world to view, you must place the webpage into your allocated spot on the World Wide Web. In most cases, the required host is either through Arches or through your COE email account. This example will show you how to publish your webpage through your Arches account.

1. The first thing to do is to access your FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Program. The most common used program is WS_FTP. Click the Thumbnail to view.
2. Once you have opened the program, you will automatically see a box in which you must type the proper information needed to transfer your files into your account.

3. In the host name textbox, type the name of the server that will host your website. For arches, the hostname is "arches.uga.edu." Use your MyID and password to login and click ok.

4. Once you've logged in, you should come to a file transfer user interface. The left pane will be where the files are located on your machine or disk; the right pane will be where you will transfer the files into your arches account.

5. In the right pane, you must use the green arrow to navigate to the correct area on the local machine in which your files are located. Once you've located them you must transfer those files to your public_html folder in your arches account. (Both areas are highlighted on the screenshot.)

Just a few points to highlight:
Once you have transferred all of your images and html files over to your arches account, you may then type in the url and view your webpage (Ex. of arches is: 'http://www.arches.uga.edu/~myid'). Please make note that inorder to view the initial page that you would like to be first seen, that page must be named index.html. If not, you will receive an error message.

FTP can also be used for COE accounts. Unless you have special web priveleges in your account, you cannot use it for webpages. However, you can use this account to house different files that you may want to save in more than one place. It is also a good tool to use if you are a pine email user and you want to obtain the attachements that you saved while viewing email through pine.

Any further questions for FTP can be answered at the OIT Helpdesk. Please contact us at coehelp@uga.edu, or 542-4357.
