<p>The show will introduce the audience to the book, <a href="http://www.nwp.org/cs/public/print/books/critical_inquiry_framework"><i>A Critical Inquiry Framework for K-12 Teachers</i></a>, edited by College of Education faculty member <strong>JoBeth Allen</strong> and Lois Alexander. The book is a set of portraits from K-12 classrooms that illustrate how teachers used the U.N. Rights of the Child as a framework to engage students in critical inquiry of relevant social issues.</p>
<p>The Red Clay Writing project, based in the University of Georgia&#8217;s College of Education, with funding from the U.S. Department of Education, holds an annual summer institute in which nearly two dozen area teachers meet to expand their knowledge and share their experience in learning how to best teach writing.  See more on the <a href="http://www.coe.uga.edu/lle/research-projects/red-clay-writing-project/">Red Clay Writing Project</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Christopher Patterson</strong>, a faculty member in the College of Education’s department of communication sciences and special education, received the 2012 Georgia Deaf Community Leader Award. Patterson, who is deaf, uses sign language to deliver his lectures, advise his students and communicate with others on and off campus.</p>

<p>A UGA multimedia piece focuses on the non-profit organization Athens Inclusive Recreation and Sports, which is seeking members of the Athens and UGA community to participate in its first ever Beep Baseball team. College of Education sports management and policy master&#8217;s student John Dunne is the marketing consultant for the AIRS organization whose volunteers are mostly comprised of UGA graduate or students. Beep Baseball is an adapted sport for the visually impaired and legally blind. All players, with the exception of the catcher, pitcher and spotters are required to wear a blindfold and be guided by modified bases and balls that produce an electronic beeping sound.</p>

Since its launch in 2010 by College of Education professor <strong>Stephanie Jones</strong> and colleague <strong>Mark Vagle</strong>, now an associate professor at the University of Minnesota, the project has reached 1,000 educators and served 25 counties across the state of Georgia.</p>

<p><strong>Adam Gray</strong> (BSEd &#8217;06), the 2012 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year who earned his bachelor&#8217;s in mathematics education from UGA, spoke on many issues relevant to those in a variety of disciplines and across the K-12 grade bands during this special colloquium on November 5 at Aderhold Hall.</p>
<p>During his talk Gray shared anecdotes and strategies that he used to overcome some of the challenges he and his fellow teachers faced daily while working at one of the lowest performing schools in his state. He also shared what he has learned from the unique opportunities afforded him as teacher of the year.</p>
