Cornileus

Tonya Cornileus (PhD ’10, M.Ed. ’04), vice president of learning and organizational development at ESPN, was featured in the March 2013 issue of Chief Learning Officer magazine.

Cornileus is responsible for the global learning, talent management and organizational development strategies for ESPN employees around the world. She also serves as an advisor to senior management at ESPN on all matters pertaining to organizational development.

She earned her doctorate in Adult Education/HR & Organizational Development and her master’s degree  in Human Resources and Organizational Development, both at the University of Georgia.

Cornileus will be doing an interactive video conference at Atlanta’s Organizational Change Alliance on May 18 titled, “Establishing an OD Practice at ESPN.”

The Athens Timberwolves will host a Georgia Beep Baseball Association round-robin tournament with visiting teams from Atlanta, Augusta and Columbus at Smith Field on Saturday, April 27, reports an April 26 story in the Athens Banner-Herald.

Hobbit skulls and the evolution of man wrap up UGA’s Origins Series reports an April 24 story  Red & Black. Norm Thompson, a UGA associate professor of science education, lectured on the origins of mankind during the presentation at the UGA Chapel.

Alvermann

Donna Alverann, Distinguished Research Professor of language and literacy education at UGA, is quoted in an April 22 article on Mind/Shift on how to correct mistaken beliefs. Alvermann notes that in study after study, “students ignored correct textual information when it conflicted with their previously held concepts.”

Mind/Shift is a website featured on National Public Radio network that focuses on the future of learning in all its dimensions – covering cultural and technology trends, groundbreaking research, education policy.

Cramond

Bonnie Cramond, director of UGA’s Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development, is interviewed on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” in the second of a three-part series about education and the arts which aired on April 17.

Upchurch

Chase Street Elementary School gifted education teacher and alumna Elizabeth (Beth) Upchurch has been named a Fountain Award recipient by State School Superintendent John Barge (EdD ’04). Upchurch was surprised with the announcement when Barge was at the school due to its being named a National Blue Ribbon School, reported a story in the April 15 Athens Banner-Herald.

Fountain Awards are given four times per year, and began in fall 2011 when presented to Marty Fountain, a teacher and coach who significantly impacted Superintendent Barge.  Upchurch was nominated for the award by Rachel Kulikoff, Clarke Central High School’s 2011 valedictorian and Clarke County’s STAR Student.

Upchurch received her master’s in education from UGA.

Norris

Norris, of the COE’s Office of Instructional Technology and manager of Teaching for Technology, is on the Board of Directors for AthFest Educates

AthFest Educates inspires, engages and educates the youth and adults of Athens in music and arts by providing sustained funding for programs and initiatives through events that showcase the community’s talent.  For the last three years, AthFest Educates has provided funding to CCSD directly through a mini-grant program and via the UGA String Project.

Norris is also a volunteer production coordinator for AthFest (music festival). The music festival and AthHalf (half marathon) are the vehicles through which AthFest Educates raises money from the local community for its programs (it obtains other funds from private foundations).

“As a production coordinator, I assist AthensFest executive director Jared Bailey with getting in place the necessary permits, stages, tents, electricity and beverages,” said Norris.  I am privileged to be part of a very active 13-member festival committee that books musical acts, obtains vendors and artists (the festival includes a juried art show), organizes KidsFest, obtains and sells merchandise, supervises marketing and PR efforts, organizes the film festival and the annual sampler music CD.”
