David R. Williams, internationally recognized as a leading social scientist focused on social influences on health, will speak on Monday, March 18 as part of the Race, Class, Place and Outcomes Speaker Series at the University of Georgia.

Williams, the Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health and professor of African and African-American Studies and of sociology at Harvard University, will deliver a talk titled, “Race, Place and Health: Tackling the Fundamental Causes of Disparities,” from 1:30-3 p.m. in Room 250 of the Miller Student Learning Center.

Before coming to Harvard, Williams was the Harold Cruse Collegiate Professor of Sociology, a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Social Research and a professor of epidemiology in the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He began his academic career as a faculty member at Yale University where he held appointments in both sociology and public health for six years.

Williams holds an MPH degree from Loma Linda University and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Michigan.

He is internationally recognized for his research which has enhanced the understanding of the complex ways in which race, racial discrimination, socioeconomic status and religious involvement can affect physical and mental health. The Everyday Discrimination scale that he developed is currently one of the most widely used measures to assess perceived discrimination in health studies.

He is the author of more than 250 scholarly papers in scientific journals and edited collections and his research has appeared in leading journals in sociology, psychology, medicine, public health and epidemiology. He has served on the editorial board of 12 scientific journals and as a reviewer for over 60 journals. According to ISI Essential Science Indicators, he was one of the Top 10 Most Cited Researchers in the Social Sciences during the decade 1995 to 2005. The Journal of Black Issues in Higher Education, ranked him as the Most Cited Black Scholar in the Social Sciences in 2008.

He was elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007. He received one of the inaugural Decade of Behavior Research Awards, and was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2001.

Williams has been involved in the development of health policy at the national level in the U.S. He has served on the Department of Health and Human Services’ National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics and on seven committees for the Institute of Medicine including the committee that prepared the Unequal Treatment report. He has held elected and appointed positions in professional organizations, such as the American Sociological Association, the American Public Health Association, and Academy Health. He also served as a member of the MacArthur Foundation’s Research Network on Socioeconomic Status and Health. Williams has also played a visible, national leadership role in raising awareness levels of the problem of health disparities and identifying interventions to address them. From 2007 through December 2009, he served as the staff director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Commission to Build a Healthier America. This national, independent and nonpartisan health commission was focused on identifying evidence-based non-medical strategies that can improve the health of all Americans and reduce racial and socioeconomic gaps in health.

With funding from the National Institutes of Health and the sponsorship of the World Health Organization, Williams directed the South African Stress and Health Study, the first nationally representative study of the prevalence and correlates of psychiatric disorders in sub-Sahara Africa. This study assessed the effects of HIV/AIDS, exposure to racial discrimination and torture during apartheid, on the health of the South African population. He was also a key member of the team that conducted the National Study of American Life, the largest study of mental health disorders in the African-American population in the U.S. and the first health study to include a large national sample of blacks of Caribbean ancestry. Currently, he directs the Lung Cancer Disparities Center at HSPH, one of 10 Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Williams has appeared on national television, including ABC’s Evening News, CNN, PBS, C-SPAN and the Discovery Channel. His research has been featured or he has been quoted in the national print media including the New York Times, Time, Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Jet and USA Today. He was also a key scientific advisor to the award-winning PBS film series, Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?

Williams’ appearance as part of the RCPO Speakers Series is co-sponsored by the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research, the School of Social Work in conjunction with the Donald L. Hollowell Professorship Lecture Series, the College of Public Health, the Office of Institutional Diversity, the College of Education’s Dean’s Council on Diversity, the Department of Sociology, and the Institute for African American Studies.

Under the coaching of Billy Jones, Mountain View High won first place in their division while two Lithonia schools—Arabia Mountain High won second place and Miller Grove High won third place. Two teams—Tucker High of Stone Mountain and the Fernbank Science Center in DeKalb County—participated in Part 2 of the competition.

Duluth Adventist Christian School, coached by Jana Taylor, clinched first place in the Middle School category while Lithonia Middle School placed second and Freedom Middle School of Canton placed third. Tucker Middle School and Henderson Middle School of Jackson also participated in the competition.

In the past, the TEAMS competition featured only high school students (grades 9-12) participating in teams of four to eight members, using real-world applications of mathematics and science to solve some of the most current engineering challenges.

This year, for the first time, the TEAMS competition was opened to middle school level students as well. This year’s challenge focused on, “Engineering a Secure Cyberspace.” There were two parts: with high school students facing a 90-minute, 80 multiple choice question session and a 90-minute, open-ended, four-question session, while the middle school students had a 60-minute, 40 multiple choice question session, and a 60-minute open-ended, four-question session.

Yolanda Curtis, of Northrop Grumman awarded the 2013 Northrop Grumman Scholarship to Mountain View High School. The scholarship provides funds for team registration to the event.

Participating middle school students were treated with an hour-long robot demonstration at UGA’s Tate Center by Chi Thai, a professor in UGA’s College of Engineering, and one of the TEAMS organizers. Participants also heard several speakers during the day, including Tim Foutz, academic director of the College of Engineering; Charles Kutal, associate dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; and Wanda Stitt-Gohdes, associate head of the College of Education’s department of career and information studies.

The fourth TEAMS annual event was held on February 20 and organized by Thai, John Mativo, an assistant professor in the department of career and information studies and Nancy Vandergrift, program coordinator in UGA’s Office of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education. They were assisted by Mickey Montevideo, public relations coordinator for the college of engineering; Xue Xing, Jixian Wen and William Tyler, all graduate students in workforce education.

More than 14,000 students across the country participate annually in TEAMS competitions. Questions are aligned with national education standards. UGA is one of two sites hosting the competition in Georgia. The other site was Georgia Tech.

TEAMS competition site sponsors include: Northrop Grumman, the UGA Office of STEM Education, and the College of Education’s department of career and informational studies.

Frances Hensley and Carl Glickman recently partnered in writing and editing, Leading for Powerful Learning: A Guide for Instructional Leaders (Teachers College Press), a book which describes a unique adult learning framework and addresses a broad spectrum of challenges instructional leaders at the district and school levels may face. The book is written for mentors, instructional coaches, principals, department heads or anyone facing the task of leading adults in their schools.

Leading for Powerful Learning provides instructional leaders with both theory and practice and includes a variety of tools that leaders can apply to support teacher learning in schools, districts, departments and teams. The authors note specific strategies, formats and tools that an instructional leader can use to support new and veteran principals and teacher leaders.

Glickman

Glickman is president of the Institute for Schools, Education, and Democracy and professor emeritus of education at UGA. In a career that spanned two decades at UGA, Glickman and his colleagues founded the Georgia League of Professional Schools, a nationally validated network of high functioning public schools dedicated to the principles of democratic education. In 1997, he was awarded the University Professorship for bringing “distinction to the mission of the university,” and students honored him as the faculty member who had the greatest influence on them “both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Hensley

Hensley, a public service associate emerita in the college’s department of elementary and social studies education, is a founding member and director of the School Reform Initiative, where she supports the learning of educators. During 15 years at UGA and 11 years as a public school educator, Hensley has made significant contributions to outreach and service. As one of the original public service faculty members in the UGA College of Education and the first to be promoted to the rank of senior public service associate, Hensley brought service and outreach to the forefront of the college’s mission. In 2002, Hensley was awarded UGA’s Walter Barnard Hill Award for distinguished achievement in public service and outreach.

Glickman and Hensley worked together in the UGA-based League of Professional Schools, a practitioner-driven network of schools in which each school implements a democratic learning community that is student-oriented and focused on improving teaching and learning for all from 1996-2002.

Their co-authors include Angela Breidenstein, an associate professor in the department of education at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and Kevin Fahey, coordinator of programs in Educational Leadership at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.

Teams of middle and high school students from across Georgia have the opportunity to win one of two Northrop Gruman scholarships being offered to participate in the annual Tests of Engineering, Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) competition hosted by the University of Georgia in February 2013.

For the past four years, several teams of high school students from across Georgia have participated in the annual Tests of Engineering, Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) competition hosted by the University of Georgia in February 2013.

This year, participating middle and high schools have an opportunity to earn one of two Northrop Grumman scholarships to cover the $125 registration fees for the day-long learning experience on the UGA campus simply by registering and meeting a set of criteria.

Mativo

TEAMS brings math and science to life for students, fostering creativity, critical thinking, teamwork and problem solving, said John Mativo, an assistant professor in the College of Education’s program of workforce education, and a College of Engineering faculty member who is co-directing the competition.

The competition features high school (grades 9-12) and middle school (grades 7-8) students participating in teams of four to eight members, using real-world applications of math and science to solve some of today’s greatest engineering challenges. The TEAMS 2013 theme is “Engineering a Secure Cyberspace.” <del datetime="2012-09-27T11:12"> </del>For the high school competition there are two parts: a 90-minute, 80 multiple choice question session and a 90-minute, open-ended, four-question session. The middle school competition includes an afternoon session of 40 multiple choice and 4 essay tasks, with each session 60 minutes in length.

Participating teams seeking one of the Northrop Grumman Scholarships are required to register for the competition through the TEAMS website: TEAMS registration site is https://www.registermychapter.com/TSA/TEAMS/reg/) and indicating that your host is UGA. The UGA website information is found at: http://www.engr.uga.edu/~mvteachr/TEAMS.html. On the day of the competition, your school will be reimbursed the registration cost of $125 for your team if you meet the criteria below and you were notified as one of the two finalists.

You must be either a first-time team participating in the competition at UGA or you can demonstrate financial need.

You are a new club in your school, such as Engineering/Science Club.

Distance from UGA.

To earn a scholarship: Teams must write a paragraph of approximately 500 words on why you should be considered for the Northrop Grumman Scholarship. The application should be emailed to: Dr. John Mativo at jmativo@uga.edu by Jan. 11, 2013. You will be notified by January 15 if you are awarded the scholarship.

The competition benefits students by showing them why math and science matters in the real world. Its academic rigor challenges students with new academic topics and presents new ideas. In addition, participants get inside information about college admissions and could win great prizes, said Mativo.

Last year, participating teams from local area schools brought 80 students for competition. The event will be held on Feb., 20, 2013.

Mativo is co-directing the competition with Chi Thai, an associate professor in the College of Engineering; and assisted by Nancy Vandergrift, a program coordinator with the Office of STEM Education.

More than 10,000 students across the country participate in TEAMS competitions. Questions are aligned with national education standards. UGA is one of two sites hosting the competition in Georgia. The other site is Georgia Institute of Technology.
