Kim Hughes, a doctoral candidate in the College of Education, has been selected as a 2013 Presidential Fellow by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES).

The ACES Presidential Fellows program supports emergent leaders and educators in the profession of counselor education. Each of the five ACES regions nominates four individuals—two new professionals and two graduate students—who show a high level of professional commitment and potential for future leadership. Hughes was one of only two graduate students selected in the Southern region.

Hughes, of Snellville, a student at UGA-Gwinnett, is expected to receive her Ph.D. in counseling and student personnel services in May 2014. Her doctorate has a P-16 educational focus with an emphasis on social justice and advocacy. She is the 2014 chair of the Georgia Safe School Coalition’s 4th annual Gay-Straight Alliance Summit, which is scheduled to be held Feb. 15th, 2014, at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta.

Hughes has a private practice in Decatur. The native of Washington, D.C., earned her master’s degree in mental counseling from Georgia State University in 2008. She received her B.A. in English from Spelman College in 1989.

Each fellow receives a complimentary registration to the 2013 ACES Conference in Denver, Colo., and will be highlighted as a fellow at the awards luncheon on Oct. 19.

Each of the Summer 2013 Innovative Instruction Faculty Grants provides $5,000 for faculty to improve teaching and learning through innovative instructional projects, such as redesign of course curricula and materials, integration of new techniques or pedagogical strategies for a course, or exploration of a new instructional technique. The projects also focus on faculty improving instruction in high-demand courses (large lecture classes, courses involving multiple sections, general education courses, etc.), as well as those that integrate instructional technology.

“This is the second year these instruction grants have been funded to faculty, and once again, the selection process was extremely difficult, due in large part to the overwhelming number of submissions and the overall quality of the proposals,” said Laura Jolly, vice president for instruction. “This year’s submissions demonstrated further interest in technology to enhance the student learning experience, as well as interests in supporting current campus initiatives. This is strong evidence of the faculty’s commitment to improving teaching and learning and expanding beyond traditional instruction methods.”

Each of the 92 proposals was reviewed by three faculty members outside the college from which the proposals were submitted. The 26 projects, which included 40 faculty across the university, receiving grants were:

Arthur M. (Andy) Horne, dean emeritus and former Distinguished Research Professor in counseling psychology at the University of Georgia College of Education, has received the 2013 University of Florida Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Horne, who earned bachelor’s degrees in English education and journalism in 1965 and a master’s in counselor education at UF in 1967, received the award May 4 at UF’s spring commencement ceremony.

For the past five years, Horne was the dean of UGA’s nationally ranked College of Education where he led the improvement of faculty productivity in outreach and research before retiring in December.

Horne is widely known for his nearly three decades of research on troubled families and ways to prevent and deal with male bullying and aggressive behavior in schools. He received more than $7 million in grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1999 as principal investigator of a program designed to reduce violence and bullying in middle schools called the Bully Busters Project. He conducted this project for more than a decade, working with schools in several states. His popular 2006 book, Bully Prevention: Creating a Positive School Climate, resulted from that project.
