Kim Hughes, a doctoral candidate in the College of Education, has been selected as a 2013 Presidential Fellow by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES).
The ACES Presidential Fellows program supports emergent leaders and educators in the profession of counselor education. Each of the five ACES regions nominates four individuals—two new professionals and two graduate students—who show a high level of professional commitment and potential for future leadership. Hughes was one of only two graduate students selected in the Southern region.
Hughes, of Snellville, a student at UGA-Gwinnett, is expected to receive her Ph.D. in counseling and student personnel services in May 2014. Her doctorate has a P-16 educational focus with an emphasis on social justice and advocacy. She is the 2014 chair of the Georgia Safe School Coalition’s 4th annual Gay-Straight Alliance Summit, which is scheduled to be held Feb. 15th, 2014, at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta.
Hughes has a private practice in Decatur. The native of Washington, D.C., earned her master’s degree in mental counseling from Georgia State University in 2008. She received her B.A. in English from Spelman College in 1989.
Each fellow receives a complimentary registration to the 2013 ACES Conference in Denver, Colo., and will be highlighted as a fellow at the awards luncheon on Oct. 19.
