University of Georgia College of Education professor Edward Delgado-Romero has been named recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Career Contributions to Research Award from a division of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Delgado-Romero, a professor in the department of counseling and human development services, is being recognized by the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45) for scholarly contributions on ethnic minority populations and issues as well as mentoring young students and professionals in the field. Awardees must be in the field 15 or more years.

Delgado-Romero, who researches racial/ethnic issues in psychology and has applied multicultural psychology to clinical practice, has been recognized numerous times in his career.

He received the APA’s 2011 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest. He has been named a fellow of the APA in two divisions (Society of Counseling Psychology and Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues). He was elected president of the National Latino Psychological Association and twice named Faculty Member of the Year by the Counseling Psychology Student Association from 2006-08. He received the Distinguished Early Career Award from the National Latino Psychological Association in 2006 and the Emerging Professional Award from Division 45 in 2006.

In addition, Delgado-Romero was recently elected to a three-year term as APA Council Representative for the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17), effective in January 2014.
Delgado-Romero, who joined the UGA faculty in 2005, received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Notre Dame.

He will receive this award at the 121st APA Annual Convention July 31 in Honolulu.
