Emily Bazelon, a senior editor at Slate and author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy, will speak at the Safe and Welcoming Schools Conference hosted by the University of Georgia College of Education at UGA Gwinnett on Friday, March 1.

Bazelon, who is also a contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine and the Truman Capote Fellow at Yale University Law School, has been recently featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Colbert Report and National Public Radio’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross. UGA researchers and practitioners from the fields of education, counseling, law and public health will provide information on using a wealth of resources, including websites, videos, books and surveys. Presentations will be interactive, with hands-on demonstrations of how to use these resources. Participants will receive a compendium of the highlighted resources to assist in their own bullying prevention and intervention efforts.

Speakers will include the following UGA faculty:

  • Andy Horne, dean emeritus, College of Education
  • Pamela Orpinas, professor, department of health promotion & behavior, College of Public Health
  • John Dayton, professor, lifelong education, administration & policy, College of Education
  • Corey Johnson, associate professor, department of counseling & human development, College of Education
  • Anneliese Singh, assistant professor, department of counseling & human development, College of Education
  • Kat Raczynski, director, safe and welcoming schools project, College of Education
