Emily Bazelon, a senior editor at Slate and author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy, will speak at the Safe and Welcoming Schools Conference hosted by the University of Georgia College of Education at UGA Gwinnett on Friday, March 1.

Bazelon, who is also a contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine and the Truman Capote Fellow at Yale University Law School, has been recently featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Colbert Report and National Public Radio’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Before joining Slate, she worked as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.  Each conference participant will receive a copy of her book.

The conference will feature UGA researchers and practitioners from the fields of education, counseling, law and public health who will provide information on using a wealth of resources that include websites, videos, books and surveys.  Presentations will be interactive, with hands-on demonstrations of how to use each resource. Participants will receive a compendium of the highlighted resources to assist in their own bullying prevention and intervention efforts.
