The Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing Strategy Workshop will be held on Friday, January 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rivers Crossing on College Station Road in Athens.
This one-day workshop prepares educators to teach the fundamental skills that students need to identify and paraphrase main ideas and details. It contains lessons on paraphrasing words, phrases and sentences, as well as identifying main ideas and details in paragraphs and short essays. It shows teachers how to implement research-based interventions to help students acquire skills for effectively comprehending reading passages. The registration fee is $125.

The Sentence-Writing Strategy Workshop will be held February 7-8 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the UGA Gwinnett Campus, 2530 Sever Road, Lawrenceville Ga. 30043

This two-day workshop prepares educators to implement research-based interventions to help students acquire strategies for writing and editing sentences for effective written communication. The Sentence Writing Strategy series includes the Fundamentals and Proficiency levels and is targeted to students in grades 4 through 12 who struggle with written expression. In addition to a writing strategy, students can be taught 14 sentence patterns with four types of sentences: simple, compound, complex and compound-complex.

Successful completion of this workshop will provide 1 PLU for eligible participants.

The registration deadline is Jan. 30, 2013. The registration fee is $275.

SIM® Professional Developer Kathy Boyle-Gast will instruct both workshops. Both registration fees include refreshment breaks, two instructor’s manuals, two student lessons books, packets of training materials, as well as supplemental handouts and power points sent electronically following the workshop to augment instruction.
