Beatón speaks at a 2009 conference

A Cuban expert in the educational development of special needs children will lead University of Georgia faculty and students in an instructional conversation on the topic in a Brown Bag event at noon on Thursday, January 17 in Room 137 of the Tate Center.

Guillermo Arias Beatón, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Havana, will deliver a presentation titled, “The education and the development of persons with special educational needs. The family as the first step in this process.” In it, he will discuss the family’s role in such work in the context of modern Cuba. He will also describe the difficulties that interfere in this area based on his research.

Beatón is a doctor of pedagogical sciences, master in psychodrama and group process, and a professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Havana and adjunct professor at the Enrique Jose Varona Pedagogical University. He has directed the work of refining the fields of educational psychology and special education in the Ministry of Education and has done extensive research in the area of child development, care for children with special educational needs and counseling psychology.

Beatón organized and directed the Center for Counseling and Psychological Care of the School of Psychology at the University of Havana and is president of the chair LS Vygotsky.  He has numerous publications on the above topics and participates in national and international events, academic exchanges and joint scientific research institutes of the former Academy of Pedagogical Sciences in the former Soviet Union. He has been a visiting professor, taught courses and lectured at universities and graduate centers in Mexico, Chile, USA, Brazil, Spain, Norway, Puerto Rico and Columbia.

The event is hosted by the UGA Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE) which is based in the UGA College of Education.
