Donna Alvermann, a University of Georgia Distinguished Research Professor in language and literacy education, has received the 2012 Computers in Reading Research Award from the International Reading Association.

The award recognizes her research and contributions that have provided crucial insight into the role of computers in literacy education and specifically, her work in the area of adolescents and online literacies.

Alvermann’s research focuses on youth’s multiple literacies in and out of school. She co-authored or edited two books in 2010, Bring It to Class: Unpacking Pop Culture in Literacy Learning (Teachers College Press) and Adolescents’ Online Literacies: Connecting Classrooms, Digital Media, & Popular Culture (Peter Lang Publishing).

Alvermann has been recognized for her work many times during her nearly three decades as a UGA faculty member. She was recently named a 2012 Fellow of the American Educational Research Association in recognition of her scientific and scholarly contributions to education research.
