Alan Ashley (C) won a 2nd place ribbon for his age group in the NSSHLA 5K race on March 31 while his daughters, Lanier (L) placed 2nd and Harlan Ashley won 1st.
The University of Georgia’s National Student Speech Language Hearing Association recently presented a check for $3,677 from their annual fundraising effort to the UGA Speech and Hearing Clinic based in the College of Education.
The UGA chapter of the NSSLHA traditionally holds several philanthropy events and fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the clinic. This year, the group set their fundraising goal at $1,000. However, with the help of the officers, members, percentage nights and a 5K race on March 31, they raised nearly three times that amount.
These funds, all donated to the UGA Speech and Hearing Clinic, go to help children who need therapy services but are not able to afford them.
In addition, Athens-Clarke County Mayor Nancy Denson proclaimed May as Better Hearing and Speech Month in a presentation at City Hall on May 7. The UGA Speech and Hearing Clinic holds free speech and hearing screenings for residents in the Athens area community each spring and fall semesters.

The NSSLHA is an organization for undergraduate and graduate students interested in the study of human communication, both normal and disordered. The UGA chapter is one of about 300 on college and university campuses across the country.
