Reeves’ book inspires conference on design-based research

Published in EPIT, Press Releases

In 2012, Reeves and co-author, Susan McKenney of the University of Twente, published "Conducting Educational Design Research. "

A book recently co-authored by University of Georgia College of Education professor emeritus Thomas C. Reeves has inspired an international conference on design-based research May 23 at the University of Twente in The Netherlands.

Design-based research (DBR) is a genre of research in which the iterative development of practical solutions to complex educational problems also provides the context for empirical investigations that yield theoretical understanding that can inform the work of teachers, researchers and designers.

Reeves, a professor emeritus in the department of educational psychology and instructional technology, has developed and evaluated numerous interactive learning programs for education and training over his three-decade career at UGA. His clients have included Apple Computer Inc., AT&T Bell Labs, IBM Corp., the U.S. Air Force Academy and the World Health Organization. In addition to presentations and workshops in the United States, he has also been an invited speaker in more than 25 countries.

In 2012, Reeves and co-author, Susan McKenney of the University of Twente, published Conducting Educational Design Research, a book which offers innovative strategies to prepare the next generation of educational researchers so that their work will have more impact of practice. The book integrates multiple perspectives of the origins, approaches and outcomes of educational design research. The work demonstrates how rigorous and relevant design research can yield theoretical understanding as well as viable solutions to urgent educational problems.

Conference presentations will reflect upon DBR’s theoretical impetus, methodological consequences and practical directions. Sessions will be led by Reeves, McKenney, Jan van den Akker, Director General of SLO (the National Expertise Centre on Curriculum Development for The Netherlands), Joke Voogt, educational science and technology professor of the University of Twente, and research professor Michael Spector, formerly of UGA, and now chair of the learning technologies program at the University of North Texas.
