University of Georgia College of Education professor Paula Schwanenflugel has co-authored a book that focuses on building foundational literacy skills through science and social studies lessons.

PAVEd for Success: Building Vocabulary and Language Development in Young Leaders was written to help early childhood educators teach vocabulary and oral language skills through lessons that introduce key social studies and science terms.

The book is based on Kindergarten PAVEd for Success, a vocabulary instruction program developed by Schwanenflugel and co-author Claire Hamilton that has been shown to have a positive impact on the vocabulary and academic achievement of kindergarten students.

It also includes a CD-ROM that gives teachers easy access to all the printable materials they need for the PAVE lessons: more than 350 vocabulary picture cards, checklists for teachers and supervisors, student tracking and assessment tools, and sample letters to parents.

In 2010, the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance reported on a randomized control trial that tested the impact of K-PAVE on 1,300 kindergarten students’ expressive vocabulary. The study found that the program had a major positive impact on students’ vocabulary development and academic knowledge, as well as for the classroom instruction outcome of vocabulary and comprehension support.

Schwanenflugel is a professor in the applied cognition and development program in the department of educational psychology and instructional technology.
