UGA global ed forum focuses on athletic development

University of Georgia faculty from across multiple disciplines will discuss their efforts related to globalization and sport during the 2012 UGA Global Educational Forum on Culture, Teaching and Research on Thursday, April 5 at the Tate Student Center.

The 2012 UGA Global Educational Forum is a university-wide comprehensive platform for a dialogue on sport and development in a globalized economy. The theme of the forum is Globalization, Sport, and Development, with an emphasis on a multidisciplinary understanding of sport as grounded in research, teaching and service. The forum brings together faculty scholars and students from across the university to share their perspectives and experiences related to sport and development in global environments.

All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit abstracts related to global issues including sports, recreation, health, education and service. Completed research or research in progress is acceptable.

Veiga

The morning keynote speaker, Ambassador Maria Fatima Veiga from the Republic of Cape Verde, will discuss “Education, Sports and Development in Cape Verde” from 8:30- 9:15 a.m.

The afternoon keynote speaker, Jesus Soares, exercise scientist and former-researcher, Sao Paulo Olympic Center, Brazil, will speak on “Opportunity or Chaos? The Challenge of Hosting the 2014 World Cup” from 3:30-4:45 p.m.

James Zhang, professor in the department of kinesiology and distinguished scholar in sports marketing and organization behavior will make a presentation titled, “It Takes the Entire Bulldog Country to Compete in a Globalized Sport Marketplace: Promoting the UGA Brand,” during the invitation-only lunch session from 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Others presenters and their topics include:

  • Gwynn M. Powell, an associate professor in the College of Education’s department of counseling & human development services, “Youth Development Through Sport Camps;”
  • Su-I Hou, an associate professor in the College of Public Health’s department of health promotion & behavior, “Innovative HIV Prevention Curriculum: A Powerful Combination of Change;”
  • Welch Suggs, Jr., visiting associate professor at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, “Title IX at 40 Years: Gender Equity in Sport at U. S. Educational Institutions.”

Morning and afternoon sessions of the conference in Grand Halls D & E are free and open to faculty, staff, students, guests and visitors. Onsite registration is requested.

The UGA Global Educational Forum on Globalization, Sport and Development is sponsored by the African Studies Institute, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, the Department of Kinesiology, the Institute for African American Studies, the Institute for Women Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute, the Office of Institutional Diversity and the Office of International Education.
