Second Language Acquisition Theorist Stephen Krashen to speak March 29-30

Stephen Krashen, emeritus professor of education at the University of Southern California, widely known for developing the first comprehensive theory of second language acquisition, will speak at two events on the University of Georgia campus March 29-30.

Krashen will deliver a lecture titled, “The Power of Reading,” on Thursday, March 29 from 3-4 p.m. at the Georgia Museum of Art. A reception follows. He will also give a talk titled, “The Common Core State Standards and National Tests: We are Backing the Wrong Horse,” from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, March 30 in Room G-5, Aderhold Hall in the College of Education

Krashen is also known for introducing the concept of sheltered subject matter teaching and as the co-inventor of the Natural Approach to foreign language teaching. He has also contributed to theory and application in the area of bilingual education, and has done important work in the area of reading. He is the author of The Power of Reading (Heinemann, 2004, second edition). His recent papers can be found at www.sdkrashen.com. He holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from UCLA.

The events are sponsored by the College of Education’s department of language and literacy education and the language and literacy education graduate organization.
