Jerome E. Morris, a professor of social foundations of education and graduate student Adeoye O. Adeyemo focus on black males and the athletic/academic paradox in an article published in the February issue of Kappan, a scholarly/practitioner journal that focuses on education-related issues. The essay challenges policymakers, school district leaders, parents and educators to think more deeply about how societal perceptions of black males as “natural” athletes, rather than intelligent students, adversely influence perceptions of black males’ academic abilities.
