Russell (MA ’99, PhD ’02), interim director of student development and an associate professor of kinesiology at Auburn University’s College of Education.

University of Georgia College of Education alumnus Jared Russell has been named a recipient of a national award recognizing his work in promoting social justice and diversity in his field.

Russell (MA ’99, PhD ’02), interim director of student development and an associate professor of kinesiology at Auburn University’s College of Education, will receive 2012 Social Justice & Diversity Young Professional Award from the Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

The award is given annually to a minority member of AAHPERD who is 40 years old or younger and who has demonstrated superior promise in the areas of service, teaching, scholarship and commitment to the goals of the alliance. Service typically focuses on underrepresented and/or underserved populations and promotion of social justice and diversity.

Russell has dedicated six years to recruiting students from historically black colleges and universities to Auburn’s campus. Visiting students talk with kinesiology faculty, College of Education administrators and graduate school administrators, obtaining extensive information about the academic opportunities in the college.

Russell also recently received the Award for Excellence and Innovation in Graduate Admissions from the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools. The award consists of a certificate, a $2,500 award to the winning graduate program or school for graduate recruitment, admissions or retention programs, and public recognition at the 2012 annual CSGS meeting in Jacksonville, Fla.

He will be presented the award at the AAHPERD’s annual meeting on March 15 in Boston, Mass.
