Culp (BSEd ’99, EdD ’05) is an assistant professor in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis.
University of Georgia College of Education alumnus Brian Culp recently received a national award for scholarship, teaching and professional leadership in the field of health and physical education.
Culp (BSEd ’99, EdD ’05), an assistant professor in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, received the 2012 Mabel Lee Award from the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
Culp’s research interests include culturally responsive pedagogy, teacher education, semiotics and examining cultural barriers to physical activity. He has been recognized for his qualitative research on urban elementary physical education teachers by the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators.
In 2009, Culp participated in a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship program to Kenya, studying democracy and education while involving himself in several civic engagement-related projects. During the summers of 2010 and 2011, he led a study abroad group back to East Africa to promote community health and physical activity.
In addition to teaching and research at IUPUI, Culp recently served on a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards committee on physical education that revised the nation’s Physical Education Standards for students in grades K-12, compiling the research bibliography. He has also published in journals such as The Physical Educator, Strategies, the ICHPERD Journal of Research and Teaching Elementary Physical Education.
He received his doctorate in physical education and sports studies, and his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from UGA. He will receive the award at the AAHPERD National Convention & Exposition on March 15 in Boston.
